Still Cleaning Up After December 9
The tornado crossed Brentlawn a little after four in the afternoon on December 9, 2023, and the National Weather Service survey named Rudolph Street and Brentlawn Drive specifically for damaged homes and for trees snapped and uprooted along the residential streets. Two winters later a good share of what it knocked over is still in the ground.
That is not neglect. The order of operations after a storm is roof, then the insurance company, then a tree crew for the trunk and the limbs, and the stump is whatever is left once the money and the attention have gone elsewhere. It sits until somebody wants to fence, re-sod, sell, or simply stop steering the mower around it.
The thing is, a storm stump is not the same object as one left by a planned removal, and quotes that treat the two as identical are usually wrong.
Snapped Versus Uprooted, and Why It Matters
A snapped tree leaves a stump that behaves normally. The root system was never disturbed, the break is somewhere above ground, and it grinds like any other job of that diameter.
An uprooted one is a different animal. The plate tilts up out of the ground and drops back partway, so you have a half-lifted disc of roots with soil and rock packed all through it and a crater alongside. Robertson County ground is Sengtown gravelly silt loam and it is full of chert, so that captured material is not soft dirt. It is gravel, and it takes the edge off a set of teeth far faster than the wood does.
On Brentlawn Drive we see both kinds within a few hundred feet of each other, which is why a photo beats a description here. The two price differently and they take different amounts of the day.
The Crater Is Part of the Job
Where a plate lifted, there is a hole beside it that has been catching water for two winters and is now soft, sunken and full of whatever blew in. Grinding the plate down without addressing that hole hands you a bog with wood chips floating in it.
How we handle it depends on size. On a small one, the ground material plus the soil shaken out of the roots goes back in, tamped in layers and mounded a few inches proud so it settles level. On a big one there is not enough material to fill it and clean fill has to come in, which is worth knowing before you plan the re-sod. Either way it will settle again over a season and want a top-up before seed goes down.
1951 Ranch Lots, Half an Acre Each
The subdivision started in 1951 and filled in through that decade on lots averaging just over half an acre, so the silver maples and water oaks the storm took were in exactly the size class that wind takes: seventy years old, wide-crowned and hollowing at the base. The white oaks on the older back lots mostly held on.
Access out here is generally easy. Brentlawn Drive, Lynwood Circle and Skyview Drive all have driveways a trailer can use and side yards a tracked machine will cross without complaint. On half an acre there is usually somewhere sensible to leave the material, which keeps the number down.
If It Is Still Leaning on Something
Anything resting on a fence, a roof edge, a shed or a power drop goes in a different queue and gets looked at same day or next. If the tree is still standing we will tell you honestly whether a stump quote is even the right call yet, or whether a removal crew has to go first.

Is a storm stump more expensive than a normal one?
An uprooted one usually is, by a meaningful margin. You are grinding through a root plate loaded with soil and chert gravel rather than clean wood, which is slower and harder on teeth, and there is a hole to deal with afterward. A snapped stump with the roots undisturbed prices exactly like any other tree of that size.
My insurance covered the tree removal but not the stump. Is that normal?
Very. A lot of policies treat the emergency removal of a fallen tree as covered and the grinding of what is left as landscaping, which is not. It is worth reading the adjuster's scope line by line before you assume, and if the stump is a genuine hazard rather than an eyesore, that argument is sometimes worth making. We will document the site either way.
The root ball is tipped up at an angle. Can you grind that or does it have to be dug out?
Grinding handles most of them. We take the standing part of the plate down in passes, work the mass back to grade, then deal with the hollow beside it. Where the plate is enormous and mostly airborne, it can be cheaper to have an excavator drop it back into its own hole first and then grind the remains flat. We will say which yours is.
There is a big dip in the yard where the tree was. Do you fill that?
We fill it with what comes out of the job plus the soil off the roots, tamped in layers and left a few inches high because it will drop. If the hole is larger than the material available, you need soil brought in, and we will tell you roughly how many yards rather than leaving you to guess after we drive away.
Half my street had trees down. Can several of us go in together?
